Microneedling

Microneedling is also often referred to as collagen induction therapy. The treatment is a non-surgical skin resurfacing procedure that can create smoother, more youthful skin and a more even complexion.

As the name suggests, the treatment involves the use of multiple ultra-fine needles that penetrate the skin, in order to stimulate the growth of new tissues and the production of elastin and collagen. Microneedling encourages the tissues to repair and heal, in order to rejuvenate the skin. It can reduce the appearance of acne scars, fine wrinkles, sun damage, stretch marks and other skin imperfections.

HOW IS MICRONEEDLING PERFORMED?

Microneedling is performed using a hand-held device that looks like a pen. A single-use cartridge containing 12 surgical steel micro-needles is inserted into it, and when the device is turned on, the needles rotate. The pen is then pressed gently against the skin, across the treatment area.

Although only the very top layers of skin are penetrated during microneedling, the procedure can cause a small amount of discomfort which is why a topical gel is applied beforehand to gently numb the area. Sometimes other topical skincare products, such as hyaluronic acid, will be applied just after the microneedling process, in order to maximize results.

To achieve the best results, it is often recommended to have multiple microneedling treatments; the number and frequency will vary according to the size of the treatment area and the type of skin problem.

WHAT TYPE OF SKIN ISSUES CAN MICRONEEDLING IMPROVE?

Microneedling procedures can treat a number of skin problems, including:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots and sun damage
  • Acne scarring
  • Stretch marks
  • Large pores
  • Surgical scarring
  • Laxity and loose skin
  • Uneven skin tone

It’s also important to point out that microneedling is suitable for use on various areas of the body, including the face, neck, back and chest. It is an incredibly versatile procedure that can be used to help a large variety of people and cosmetic issues.

HOW LONG IS MICRONEEDLING RECOVERY TIME?

Microneedling does not have a major impact on your body, so once each procedure is finished, you can continue with your usual daily routine almost immediately. It does cause moderate redness and the treated area and can feel a little tender for up to 24 hours, but the discomfort is generally minimal; it can be compared to a mild sunburn. It is recommended that you avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight and to beauty products that may contain irritants. Mineral makeup is a great way to cover this initial redness without exacerbating it.

CAN MICRONEEDLING BE PERFORMED ON ANY SKIN TYPE?

Microneedling is completely safe for all patients, no matter what their skin color or type. Since the needles only puncture the very top layers of skin with microscopic channels, there is no risk of pigmentation issues or of extreme inflammation. It is a virtually risk-free procedure that will produce lasting results.
