If so, you’re in good company. Since the pandemic, we’ve been looking at ourselves on video chats more than ever before—and many people see room for improvement when it comes to their facial wrinkles.
According to a survey conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 11% of women report that they are more interested in cosmetic plastic surgery or nonsurgical cosmetic procedures (like BOTOX) now than they were before COVID-19.1
What Does BOTOX Do?
BOTOX is a prescription drug made from Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is primarily used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles by blocking signals from your nerves to your muscles, preventing them from contracting. This causes wrinkles to relax and soften, giving you a more youthful appearance.
BOTOX injections are most useful in treating:
- Frown lines between your eyebrows
- Crow’s feet by the corners of your eyes
- Forehead furrows
What to Expect During the Procedure
Administering BOTOX injections takes just a few minutes and doesn’t require anesthesia. A numbing medication or cream can be applied to the skin beforehand if you’re worried about discomfort. Your doctor will use a thin needle to inject a small dose of BOTOX into your skin or specific muscles.
Results usually take a few days to appear and will last anywhere from three to 12 months. Maintenance injections are needed if you wish to continue treatment beyond the initial dose.
Side effects are rare, but temporary bruising at the injection site is common. However, BOTOX can be dangerous if it is administered improperly. That’s why you’ll want to choose a skilled and certified doctor who is experienced with BOTOX injections—like one of our expert providers at Ear, Nose & Throat Associates. Q&A with Kari
Kari Dietrich, RN
Aesthetic Nurse Specialist
ENT Aesthetics
What makes you passionate about the field of aesthetics?
“Working in aesthetics for the past 20 years has enabled me to combine my passion to create with my love of all things skin, and, most importantly, build wonderful relationships with my clientele. I absolutely love making positive changes in the way someone looks and feels about themselves. It really impacts every aspect of their life. I’ve shared tears of joy and heard words of gratitude from many patients over the years. This is how I know I am fulfilling my life’s purpose.”
How do you determine which products and treatments are best for your clients?
“You wouldn’t start a beautiful painting on a canvas that already has imperfections. My approach to skin care envelopes the same philosophy. When I consult with a client, the first thing I see is the quality of their skin. Almost every client that walks through my door has some degree of sun damage that reveals itself through brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles, or skin laxity. My mission is to return my client’s skin to a healthier state with a more youthful glow. This is accomplished by a completely customized approach. Skin care is not one size fits all. I offer several medical grade skin care lines along with many treatments, from red carpet peels to laser resurfacing, Botox to fillers.”
What is your training/experience with Botox?
“The first time I saw someone’s results from getting Botox (20 years ago) my jaw hit the floor because I could literally see 10 years disappear from my client’s face. That was when I recognized the power of what Botox can do cosmetically. Personally, I started getting Botox in my early 30’s and feel it has kept the wrinkles away. I am now seeing patients in their 20’s getting Botox for preventative maintenance. I also see several patients who find Botox helps relieve tension headaches that occur in the forehead.”
What should someone do to prepare for their consultation?
“The first thing someone who is considering a cosmetic treatment should do is make a commitment for change. Understand that attending regular treatments and integrating medical grade skin care into your daily skin care regimen requires commitment. Whether you are in your 20’s or 60’s, a good skin care routine makes all the difference, and boosts self-confidence! Second, it’s all about doing small tweaks overtime. It’s never too late to get started!”
